Those who have a bachelor’s degree in a major other than education can pursue an initial teaching certificate in special education. In addition to the special education program coursework, you will also need to complete the professional sequence courses.
Prerequisites: Teacher certification in any discipline (initial teaching certification may be obtained through this program with the completion of additional courses)
For K-6 and K-12: Up to 17 credit hours of additional coursework in literacy, math, and working with families may be required.
For 7-12: In addition to the required courses, you must complete 18 credit hours in one of the following academic concentrations: Language Arts, Math, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Business Education, Art, Music, Health, Physical Education, World Language (French, German or Spanish), Psychology and K-6 Special Education.
